Eligibility

If the Veterans Service Commission provides the assistance needed, must have already applied for and been denied service through the Veterans Service Commission. Serves Veterans who are eligible for membership in the American Legion and who have minor children (can be legal guardian and do not have to be active members in the American Legion - just eligible to join). Veterans must have served for one day on active duty during one of the following periods of war to be eligible for membership in the American Legion: 08/02/1990 - Present (Gulf War/War on Terror), 12/20/1989 - 01/31/1990 (Panama), 08/24/1982 - 07/31/1984 (Lebanon/Grenada), 02/28/1961 - 05/07/1975 (Vietnam), 06/25/1950 - 01/31/1955 (Korea), 12/07/1941 - 12/31/1946 (WWII), 04/06/1917 - 11/11/1918 (WWI).

Required documents

Proof of address/residency, proof of income, copy of bill, photo I.D., discharge paper (DD-214), birth certificate for applicant, birth certificate for child, marriage license.

NOTE: the Veterans Service Commission in each county may provide different types of assistance (example: some may provide assistance with water bills, while other counties do not.)

Description

Provides temporary financial assistance for veterans with minor children in which the veteran is eligible for membership in the American Legion. Financial assistance may cover the housing, food, utilities and health care expenses of eligible children.
