Eligibility

  • Individuals who served in the active military, naval, or air service and didn't receive a dishonorable discharge may be eligible for VA health care benefits if they served 24 continuous months, or the full period for which they were called to active duty.
  • Individuals who are current or former members of the Reserves or National Guard must have been called to active duty by a federal order and completed the full period for which they were called to active duty to be eligible.

Minimum duty requirements may not apply for individuals who:

  • were discharged for a disability that was caused, or made worse, by their active-duty service
  • were discharged for a hardship or “early out”
  • served prior to September 7, 1980
