Eligibility

- One or both of the applicants must be a resident of Summit County for a marriage license to be issued. Applicants from out of state may apply for a marriage license in Summit County, provided the marriage ceremony is performed in Summit County. - Must bring all required documents.

Required documents

- Each applicant must provide their Social Security number (kept confidential), current address, age, birth date, place of birth, and birth names of each father and mother. If the birth names of the parent is unknown, applicant must bring his/her birth certificate to the Court. - Applicants must have a valid government-issued photo ID (Driver's License, State ID, Passport, Military ID, or Green Card). NOTE: When applicants “Add Previous Marriages”, enter the Most Recent marriage FIRST. Both applicants MUST appear at the Summit County Probate Court, Marriage License Department, located at 209 South High Street, Akron, Ohio 44308 WITHIN 30 DAYS to finalize and receive a copy of your Marriage License. Hours are 8:00am to 3:30pm Monday through Friday, except holidays. The following documents are required: A certified copy of birth certificate, if one of the parent’s names are not listed. A valid driver’s license or State ID, Passport, Visa, or Green Card. A certified copy of the most recent divorce/dissolution decree, if applicable. A copy of death certificate if a former spouse is deceased. Both applicants MUST be present.

Application process

Call the marriage license desk or visit the website for more information. Each couple will complete only one eMarriage License Application. Available on website or in person at https://summitohioprobate.com/emarriage-application. Both applicants must be present when applying for a license. In order to process an application and issue a license, the applicant must be at the court no later than 3:30 pm. Complete the Marriage Application using the eMarriage License Application portal and review all the information for accuracy. Have credit card available when applying. Once application is completed and the application fee is paid, a confirmation email and a separate email with a receipt will be sent.

Fees

- The fee for obtaining a marriage license is $64.00, which includes two (2) certified copies of the Marriage abstract. There will be a 5% credit card processing fee. Applicants have 30 days from the time of application to appear at the Court for issuance. The application fee is non-refundable and applicants must reapply and pay the fee if they do not obtain the license within the 30 days.
