Provides information to the public about appliances, clothing, electronics, electrical power devices, furniture, household products, lighting/lighter products, sports/exercise equipment, toys, and other consumer products that are subject to voluntary or mandatory recall or about which safety concerns have been registered.

Develop plans to address public health emergencies (such as a biological attack or a flu pandemic). Provides for interaction of Public Health with other public safety organizations to ensure a cooperative response to emergencies that threaten the safety of health of residents.

Monitors beaches along the Lake Erie shoreline for E. coli and other harmful bacteria. Water samples are collected at the beaches and the results are reported to the public. Offers a web site where the information is posted and can be accessed by the public. If the bacterial levels are greater than the recreational standard, a sign is posted at the beach to warn swimmers of the risk of illness.

Performs services to protect and promote public health in Defiance County. This is done by regulation enforcement, inspections and providing educational materials and programs for the public. The Environmental Health Division is responsible for the following programs: body art, boy/girl scout camp inspections, food protectipn program, harmful algal blooms, household sewage treatment systems, manufactured home parks, private water systems, public health nuisance complaints, real estate/subdivisions, recreation park camps, school environmental health, smoke-free workplace, swimming pools and spas and vector-borne and zoonotic disease.

Provides recreational boating safety tips, investigates consumer complaints about boats, issues product safety recalls, and maintains a database of boats that have been recalled. This agency regulates recreational watercraft. Boating recalls are NOT covered by the Consumer Product Safety Commission.

Provides information about the West Nile Virus, a virus which is transmitted by the bite of an infected mosquito and/or rabies. West Nile Virus causes mild, flu-like symptoms in healthy people and serious inflammations of the brain and spinal cord in people who are elderly or who have compromised immune systems. Rabies is an infectious disease transmitted by animal bite to humans that can result in paralysis and death if not treated. Hotline staff can provide information on symptoms, control, and other issues related to both diseases.

Maintains the National Injury Information Clearinghouse, conducts investigations of alleged unsafe or defective products, and establishes product safety standards. Assists consumers in evaluating the comparative safety of products and conducts education programs to increase consumer awareness. Operates the National Electronic Injury Surveillance System, which monitors a statistical sample of hospital emergency rooms for injuries associated with consumer products. Maintains free hotline to provide information about recalls and to receive reports on unsafe products and product-related injuries. Publications describe hazards associated with electrical products and children's toys. Spanish-speaking operator available through the toll-free number listed above

Responsible for the control and extinction of fires in urban or wilderness areas; the inspection of buildings and hillside property to ensure potential fire hazards; and the maintenance of equipment and trained firefighters necessary for a quick and efficient response to fires when they occur.

Provides information on water boiling alerts which are issued to the community in an effort to protect citizens from unsafe drinking water. An alert is issued after positive tests (samples for fecal coliforms, changes in turbidity measurements), or water main breaks. When an alert is issued, information regarding that particular incident will be publicized. In general, when an alert is issued water should be boiled for three minutes and cooled before drinking. Also, water should be let to run out of the tap for about five minutes before using the first time after shut-off.

Strengthens our community by preventing unintended pregnancy and empowering individuals with the knowledge, opportunity, and freedom to make private decisions about their reproductive and sexual health. PPSWO provides family planning services, this includes services for birth control, STD testing and treatment, annual and breast exams, pregnancy test and options counseling, UTI, Trich, yeast and bacterial vaginosis testing and treatment, PEP and PREP testing and prescriptions as well as comprehensive sex education training.

Responsible for control and extinguishing of fires in an urban setting; provide emergency medical services to the community the inspection of buildings and property to eliminate potential fire hazards; provide community wide fire safety, first aid, CPR, and life safety education; and training of firefighters and emergency medical technicians to maintain high quality of service in a timely manner.

Responsible for communicable disease control in Preble County, including rabies and tuberculosis control. Pays for medications for indigent tuberculosis patients and performs follow-ups with them.

Does not handle complaints about cars, food, drugs, medicine, medical devices and other medical products, child car seats, cosmetics, firearms, and business practices. Alerts the public to product hazards and product recalls (including those relating to lead) and provides safety information. Offers printed safety information on a variety of consumer products and issues.

Informs the public of occurrences that may constitute a public health emergency and provides safety instructions.

Protects and improves the health of the community through the use of public health nurses. Services include immunization clinics, screening programs, nutrition counseling (WIC), outreach, and health education and prevention programs for the community at large.

Provides safety information and answers questions about food, nutrition, dietary supplements, food labeling, cosmetics, pet food, food additives, food biotechnology, blood products, vaccines, and medical devices. Handles complaints concerning food (except food items inspected by the USDA including meat, poultry, and egg products), food labeling, cosmetics, dietary supplements, and medical devices that are under FDA regulation.

In Centerville only, dispatches officers to the scene of a crime in progress or a police emergency incident (call 911). Dispatches officers to the scene of incidents where citizens need non emergency assistance (call 937-433-7661). Also investigates crimes and reports of missing persons, fingerprints arrestees, and investigates incidents of alleged police misconduct.

Issues bulletins and informs the public of conditions which are conducive to the development and spread of a communicable disease. Advises the public of outbreaks that puts them at risk, including food safety recalls.
