The Advocates for Families CASA Program is seeking caring adults to volunteer in Knox County. Volunteer duties include making contact with the child once a month; full case investigation reviewing all relevant documents; meet with anyone who has information regarding the child, including but not limited to case workers teachers, medical professionals; maintain written documentation: maintain complete confidentiality; attend all court hearings and meetings; complete annual continued education hours as required by Ohio Supreme Court Rule 48 guidelines. NOTE: CASA supervisor walks alongside each volunteer throughout the life of each case.

Juvenile divisions hear cases involving persons under 18 years of age who are charged with acts that would be crimes if committed by an adult. They also hear cases involving unruly, dependent and neglected children. Juvenile courts have jurisdiction in adult cases involving paternity, child abuse, nonsupport, contributing to the delinquency of minors and the failure to send children to school.

Receives and reviews all juvenile traffic violations. Also handles juvenile tobacco violations. After the citation is given, a court date is set at which time the juvenile will enter his or her plea. Hearings can be waived in some cases.

Assumes responsibility for the arraignment, adjudication, and disposition of cases of unruly, delinquent, neglected, dependent, and abused children.

ARC provides services to prevent or limit a youth’s involvement with the juvenile justice system by providing appropriate interventions and coordination of community resources and supports. - ARC will serve Licking County youth up to the age of 18, and their families. - Youth and families may come to the ARC to seek assistance at 65 W. Church Street in Newark - ARC staff will assess the youth, speak to family members and other stakeholders. - ARC staff will perform necessary screens, conduct brief interventions, and connect the family with appropriate community resources.

Handles cases dealing with juvenile offenses related to drugs or drug use. Provides assessment and possibly treatment. Case managers work with the individual, school, home, and treatment provider. Open hearings are held weekly to assess individual cases and hearings become less frequent with compliance to the program's rules. After completion of the program, charges are dropped from youth's record.

Assumes responsibility for the arraignment, adjudication, and disposition of cases of unruly, delinquent, neglected, dependent, and abused children. Resolving juvenile court cases usually starts with the police or other persons presenting information about possible delinquent or unruly children to the court. If alternatives such as mediation or diversion are not appropriate, an official complaint is filed. A hearing is held, the youth is determined delinquent or unruly and then the court decides what action should be taken or the case may be dismissed. A delinquent is a child who has committed an act which, if committed by an adult, would be a crime (such as theft or murder); an unruly is a child who has committed an act that is illegal for children but not for adults (such as truancy or curfew violations).

Provides jurisdiction over: referred cases of delinquent, unruly dependent and neglected children; juvenile traffic offenders; and under special conditions, minors applying for consent to marry.

Provides the Juvenile Court which has jurisdiction to hear the following types of cases: Delinquent youth - those who have committed an offense, prior to their 18th birthday, that would be a crime if committed by an adult; Unruly youth - those who have committed a status offense that only applies to someone under the age of 18; Juvenile Traffic Offender - anyone who has committed a traffic offense prior to attaining the age of 18; Abused children - those children who have been physically or sexually abused by parents, guardians or other adults; Neglected children - those children who are not properly cared for or are abandoned by their parents or guardians; Dependent children - those children who are without proper care or support through no fault of their parent or guardian; Custody - to determine the custody of any child not a ward of another court of this state.

Also handles juvenile tobacco violations. At the time the citation is given, the juvenile is presented a court date for a hearing in order to enter his/her plea. If the juvenile pleads not guilty, then a trial before a magistrate is set. Hearings can be waived in some cases.

Receives referrals from law enforcement agencies, schools, stores, and parents. After reviewing written reports and conducting interviews with parents, the department determines how to proceed with the case. Efforts are made to divert youth from the formal Court process whenever possible. These efforts include unofficial hearings, warning letters, and mediation. Recommendations are made which include referrals for drug and alcohol services, educational programs for shoplifters, essays, and other options. Other requests for misdemeanor or unruly charges are approved and result in a formal Court hearing.

Provides programs to meet the needs of unruly, abused, neglected, delinquent and dependent youth.

Handles cases in which Lorain County Children Services is involved because of allegations of abuse, neglect or dependency of children. Handles cases involving unmarried parents for custody, paternity, child support or visitation. Handles juvenile civil protection orders.

Perry County Juvenile Court cases include unruly, delinquent, abused, dependent and neglected children, as well as cases that involve traffic offenses. Jurisdiction also includes adult paternity cases, nonsupport, visitation and custody of children whose parents are unmarried as well as child abuse and contributing to the delinquency of a minor.

The Marion Family Court presides over Juvenile, Domestic Relations, Probate and child support hearings.

Provides services for delinquent youth and informal services for unruly youth. The Court operates the Juvenile Detention Center, a residential facility, and the Youth Treatment Center for felony youth offenders. The Court also hears matters regarding abuse, neglect, dependency, parentage, abortion, parental by-pass, and some matters pertaining to child support, custody, and visitation.

Ottawa County Juvenile Court and its partners believe that families should supported in raising their own children whenever feasible.

All CASA cases are heard through The Knox County Juvenile Court at 111 East High Street - Mount Vernon.
