Sanitarians conduct comprehensive inpsections of schools, the county jail, campgrounds, RV parks, and manufactured home parks. In cooperation with the Ohio Department of Health, the sanitarians review plans for, license, and inspect all campgrounds, public pools, and spas.

Provides fire prevention and protection services for the City of Garfield Heights. Provides periodic CPR and First Aid training, fire extinguisher training, carbon monoxide presentations, fire safety presentations for organized groups (such as an employer, church, schools, etc.) Also provides carbon monoxide investigations for residences or businesses. If there is a carbon monoxide positive test result, will refer to local gas supplier and leave a digital unit in the house for 24 hrs for continuous checks.

Provides information on indoor and outdoor air pollutants including radon, carbon monoxide, ozone and others.

Lead is a naturally occurring element found in small amounts in the the earth's crust that can be toxic to humans and animals and cause adverse health effects. Homes, buildings, schools or daycare centers built before 1978 may contain some lead paint. Lead can damage nearly every system in the human body and has harmful effects on both adults and children. Lead poisoning is the greatest environmental threat to children in Ohio. FCPH offers a home lead inspection service for a fee.

Establishes and enforces standards to protect air and water quality (including lead in water), as well as solid and hazardous waste management and cleanup. Insures proper handling of solid wastes and hazardous materials including radiative substances, toxic fumes, and explosives. Offers information and education about environmental issues such as air quality, water quality, water supply, and others. Handles non-emergency complaints about violations of state's environmental protection laws. Examples of complaints include (but are not limited to) smoke or heavy dust emissions from industrial facilities, illegal dumping, burning of trash or tires, drinking water issues, destruction or draining of wetlands, and discharging industrial or agricultural waste into water or storm sewers. Offers opportunities for citizens to participate in public advisory groups, public information sessions, and public hearings. Can provide information regarding lead in water including if the area is under an advisory and/or what actions one can take.

Nursing and community health division providing: communicable disease follow-up; immunizations for children and adults; foreign travel immunizations; flu shots; case management for children with medical handicaps; community health assessment and education; tuberculosis clinic; preventative health services. WIC program provides supplemental nutrition support to women, infants and children under the age of 5.

Takes reports and investigates public complaints of unlawful spills and dumping of hazardous waste and other materials into storm sewers, waterways, and soil within the county. Does not handle airborne emissions (see EPA).

Responsible for sewer maintenance, water connections within the public right of way, and treatment of sewage and wastewater. In case of basement flooding, will send an inspector to the site to determine if blockage or break is in the main sewer line (for example, the storm sewer in the street) or on private property (from the curb to the house). Can only address issues with publicly owned sewer line. The sewer line from the curb to the house is the homeowners' responsibility. Where possible, will give the property owner advice on what is needed to remedy the problem. Takes complaints and reports from consumers concerning water and sewage service and will answer questions about billing. Prepares annual drinking water quality reports, and responds to inquiries about water pollutants. Reads water meters monthly.

Consultation and referrals by staff to residents or organizations affected by bed bugs and provide information such as fact sheets and website links. No funding is available to help with infestation.

Takes reports on emergencies and other sudden public threats such as oil, radioactive, and other hazardous chemical spills as well as railroad incidents and maritime reports of suspicious activity and relays them to the proper authorities for action.

Radon is a colorless, odorless radioactive gas that forms when naturally occurring uranium decays. Radon gas is commonly found in rocks and soil, and it enters homes through cracks and other holes in the foundation. Prolonged exposure to radon levels above 4 picocuries per liter of air significantly increases the risk of lung cancer, even for nonsmokers. The USEPA considers radon the second leading cause of lung cancer in the United States overall, and it is the leading cause among non-smokers. The only way to find out if you have elevated radon levels in your home is to conduct a simple test.

Conducts regular health inspections of facilities that are open to the public and looks for accumulations of dirt, dust, mold, or trash; broken steps, uneven flooring, or other obstructions to safe access; unsanitary kitchen facilities; defective heating, lighting, or ventilation; lack of hot water in laundry and/or lavatory facilities, and other unsafe or unsanitary conditions.

MCHD conducts inspections of health spas, tattoo and permanent makeup studios, body piercing shops, aesthetics salons, hairdressing and barber shops, nail salons, waxing/hair removal services, tanning studios and other personal services businesses to check that cleaning, sanitation and infection control practices are followed.

Provides inspections and licensure of all commercial and residential plumbing; campgrounds; permanent, temporary, and mobile food operators; swimming pools and spas; water haulers; tattoo and body piercing establishments, and schools. Collects water samples from sites that have a non-municipal water system to ensure bacteriologically acceptable drinking water. Inspects sewage systems and private water systems, such as wells and cisterns.
